TORONTO WEST 14U RAVENS WIN GOLD

The 14U girls’ team, the TORONTO WEST RAVENS, played in a spectacular tournament on Saturday, December 15th, 2007 at Kipling Collegiate School.  It was a Zone Tournament and the RAVENS’ only chance of making it out of Zone. Only a GOLD MEDAL would also enable advancement to TIER 2.

The RAVENS began the day strong, and with high hopes.  They finished the morning undefeated, and up to this point, hadn’t yet faced very strong opposition. Excellent team moral and well-trained skills were the foundation for this early success.  The RAVENS continued playing very well throughout the tournament and soon found themselves warming up for the final most important game of the day:  The GOLD MEDAL match.  The RAVENS were facing ‘Northern Chill Black’, a team that had a similar playing style as the Ravens: Strong serving and an excellent attack.

It only took the first rally, which seemed to last forever, for everyone to realize that this was going to be a very close and compelling match.  The RAVENS continued to play as they had done all day, never losing their focus, strength, and most importantly, their good spirit. At the end of a valiant first game, Chill prevailed 25 – 18; mainly to good hitting and less unforced errors.

Leaving the previous game behind them, the RAVENS played the second set point by point, concentrating hard and applying all of their good skills. With constant encouragement from the bench and our coaches, Cathy and  Paul, our players worked together to put those points on the scoreboard.  The RAVENS played the game with great serving, passing, blocking and spiking. The Northern Chill players didn’t know what hit them, when our middle player, Katarina Ignatovich, spiked at them. The RAVENS won the second game 25-19.

In the third and final game, both teams knew that this was their chance to make it out of the Zone.  It was a game full of suspense. Both teams were excellent contenders for the win.  In the end, our superb blocking shut down the Northern Chill’s excellent spikes, while our opponents fell victim to the RAVENS’ quick attack.  With a spectacular final point, the RAVENS won the game with a score of 15-10.

TIER TWO, here we come!

T-WEST 17U GIRLS WIN BRONZE AT QUEBEC OPEN

For the second year in a row, a 17U Toronto West team has returned from the Quebec Open with victory hardware!

On Saturday, November 10, our 17U Girls had a blast traveling by club van to Longueuil, Quebec where next day they played fifteen games over an exhausting twelve hours to eventually win the BRONZE MEDAL. Along the way, we tailgated a dead deer, marveled at the beauty of Notre Dame of Montreal Cathedral, had a wild-and-crazy dinner in downtown Montreal, and found MORTY, our new team mascot, in the port of old Montreal.

This year’s 17U Girls team has undergone a considerable change from last year’s squad, welcoming three new players to the roster, and having to train new setters from scratch. The Quebec Open provided an excellent opportunity for our girls, who only a week earlier had suffered a rough start to the new season, to come into their own and play much improved volleyball against some strong teams from Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. The final (victorious) match of the day was not over until after 9 pm. It proved a valuable lesson for our girls on how to hang tough and not play down to the opposition.

A delicious team dinner at Chenoy’s Deli in Point Clair and a smooth ride home on Monday morning rounded out this excellent weekend.

This year’s 17U Girls are determined to work hard to achieve maximum personal and team success, have a lot of fun, and travel extensively.

This year’s 17U T-WEST girls are Sarah Kanko (Captain), Nina Sljivo, Tania Vera, Mila Stankic, Laura Rimar, Lauren Dane, Maja Manic, Najdana Andjelkovic, Ana Burilo, Cassy Muldoon, and Kristy Blair.

TVO’S “DON’T SIT STILL” STARRING AJ DAVID AND THE 14U T-WEST RAVENS WILL AIR ON CABLE 2 ON SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 2007 FROM 9AM TO 12 NOON!

Apr. 26 2007

THE T-WEST RAVENS MOST DEFINITELY DO NOT SIT STILL, THEY ROCK!

Following the excitement of filming an episode of TVO's DON'T SIT STILL, the RAVENS entered last weekend's Tier 4 14U Provincial Championships as generally accepted underdogs. As 13U players competing one year above their age, the RAVENS were seeded dead last.

But the RAVENS quickly showed what they were made of and how hard they have worked throughout the inaugural year of their volleyball carriers: By the end of the first day, they had captured first place in their pool, winning all four of their matches.

Sunday's play-offs saw the RAVENS juggernaught continue, and cap everything off with a decisive 2-0 Gold Medal win over the South County Bandits White. Excellent physical skills and composure under pressure are two athletic assets which abound on this team, and for which the RAVENS can thank their coach, Cathy Radvanyi.

The Provincial Championship squad is comprised of Kristan Luong and Erin Clancy (Co-Captains), "AJ" Anna Julia David, Natalie Di Felice, Tea Haxhillari, Katarina Ignjatovic, Laura Kosiba, Elizabeth Kroman, Kaitlyn Lemieux, Katharine Milicic, Madeleine Radvanyi, Anna Swiatowiec and Jelena Tanic.

See Ravens’ Page for more photos.

GO TEAM!

THE T-WEST RAVENS AREN’T SITTING STILL

Forget “Canadian Idol”, “Dancing With The Stars”, and other glamorous TV shows which promise that you will be on television. You don’t need to dance or sing. You just need do be a great volleyball player to be on T.V.!  You might be wondering who we are and how do you get on T.V.?  We are the T-West Ravens, and we are the Girls’ 13U team from the Toronto West Volleyball Club and we have a huge love and a great passion for volleyball.

On Tuesday April 10th, 2007, Julie Patterson from TVO’s “Don’t Sit Still” (DSS) came to our practice to talk to us about volleyball. We showed Julie some of the basic skills, like hitting, serving and passing. She asked us what we like the best about volleyball, how we got into the sport, and what our long term goals were.  Our team spokesperson was A.J. David, and she was an amazing ambassador for girls’ volleyball!  We all agreed that the best thing about our sport is spending time on the court with our friends and having a great time.

If you want to find the answers to these and other questions, check out Toronto West’s website www.torontowest.net for more information and most importantly for the time the show will be on the air.  Go TWEST!

T-WEST 14U BOYS WIN ROCHESTER CAN AM…AGAIN

On the weekend of January 12th, the Toronto west 14U Boys  headed into uncertain territory. They were up for a challenge, and they weren’t going to lose without a fight: GO BIG or GO HOME ! Upon arriving in Rochester, the team relaxed for a night, getting prepared for a tournament that would hold some surprises in store.

On the first tournament morning we were ready to play. After easily defeating ROCHESTER PACE RED 25-4 and 25-5, we went on to beat PACE BLUE 25-8 , 25-17.

Of the twelve teams competing at 14U level, three of the four teams who qualified for the AA POWER POOL were Canadian: MAC, FOREST CITY and TORONTO WEST. This did not sit well with the American squads who were surprised at the excellent quality of volleyball being imported from Ontario. With convincing wins over FOREST CITY and MAC, TORONTO WEST 14U was on a streak. Bring on the Americans! However, after a well-deserved rest, our boys lost unnecessarily to PACE BLACK. (Maybe we shouldn’t have had all those chips and pop watching football the night before!)

After a few words of advice from Coach Dave, we went on to play RICHMOND VBC in the Quarter - Finals. We beat RVC 25-17 and 25-19, and now found ourselves facing DURHAM ATTACK in the Semis. We beat DURHAM with a fresh setter and a new strategy 25-14, 25-15. Now it was on to the Finals where we would play the only team that had so far beaten us: ROCHESTER PACE BLACK.

In the deciding, final match, TORONTO WEST lost the first set 28-30. A real nail biter! In the second set we played at our best and won 25-18. In the third game, PACE took an early lead; but TORONTO WEST focused on playing the game one point at a time. Before long, the game was tied 9-9, and everyone was glued to the edge of their seat. PACE carved out a four-point lead, bringing the title closer to the home. PACE thought they had the game in the bag; but TORONTO WEST players dug deep and showed fine character by not panicking and just playing as hard as they could.

Playing one point at a time, we soon found ourselves serving for match- and championship point: The ball floated over the net and was played back to us…. BUMP, SET AND SPIKE, no, HAMMER! The ball hit the home court. The game was over. The home crowd fell silent. Our players went ape!

For the second year in a row, TORONTO WEST 14U Boys have abducted the 14U Rochester Can-Am championship north of the border!

The TORONTO WEST 14U Boys would like to thank Coach Dave, Cathy, Joe, George and Stef for their guidance and support throughout this memorable weekend!
